ROCKY RIDGE |
||
The Gillett family chose this hidden location in the early 1800s to build their home because of the strong spring that emerges from the mountain above the Jackson River. An 18’ x 26’ chestnut log cabin was the first home. Frame additions and clapboard siding were added as the family grew in size and prosperity. In 1987 the property was restored and modernized by the current owners, Bob and Lilias Folan. Their children and grandchildren have been introduced to the wonders of the forest and river from this idyllic 247 acre property on Rocky Ridge. The original two story log cabin has a living room with an old stone fireplace and soapstone woodstove, wide pine floors, two bedrooms, a full bath, office and enclosed porch. The frame addition has a large dining area, newly renovated kitchen, large pantry, third bedroom and one full and one half bath. An adjacent screened porch looks west over the river valley to the immense National Forest tract on Back Creek Mountain. A large deck overlooks a crystal clear swimming pond fed directly from the spring. The Folan’s renovations have retained all the historic beauty of the original log structure and added the modern conveniences needed for complete comfort and year-round use. The 247 acre property is the entire western face of Rocky Ridge from the mountaintop down to the valley floor where the Jackson River flows through the property. This section of the Jackson is regarded as some of Virginia’s finest trout fishing. The river flows through over five miles of National Forest immediately below the property and through the Hidden Valley Gorge area. An extensive system of trails connects to the central path along the river. The property has numerous building sites. One site on the north end of the property has long views up the river valley towards Bolar. Old roads lead throughout the property to several small fields and abandoned log barns. One of the most impressive characteristics of this property is the complete privacy, quiet and solitude. All you hear is the sound of the wind in the pines and the river down in the valley. On a clear night the total lack of any lights in view allows the stars to shine in number and brightness seldom seen in the East. You will be hard pressed to find a more complete recreational property, but if you need more to do or a Sunday New York Times, The Homestead resort (click here) is only 13 miles south with three championship golf courses, tennis, spa, fine dining, ski slopes, shooting club, equestrian center and numerous shopping opportunities. $1,475,000 To request a full color brochure, click here.
