In today’s world, a truly secure landscape is very hard to find without days of travel, but that is precisely what Meadow Lane offers. The 857 acre farm is surrounded on three sides by over 15,000 acres of George Washington National Forest. Meadow Lane includes two miles of the Jackson River. In Bath County, our rivers are entirely private property, so there is no canoe or kayak traffic passing through: the landowner controls all aspects of the river use. Few places in America still offer this complete form of ownership. Click below for more details
Meadow Lane has been the home of one family since 1911 and has serveded an anchor to 5 generations of the family grounding them in the beauty of rural, environmental and sporting pursuits. The main house was built in 1860 and was completely renovated in 2012. The Lodge has served as home to children and grandchildren. Two additional cottages insure there is room for everyone. A pool and tennis court are centrally located for all to use.
The farm focused on competitive horse breeding in years past while the current generation enjoys trout fishing, mountain biking and hunting. The grand barns have been well maintained and the extensive trail systems links into the National Forest trails along the river that extend for 8 miles upstream.
While Meadow Lane is only a 15 minute drive to all of the amenities of The Homestead Resort and Hot Springs. Meadow Lane sees no other homes or development of any kind. Meadow Lane has all the quiet, privacy and security anyone could desire, but when good food, shopping, golf, tennis, skiing and good music sound appealing, it’s all close at hand.
The 1860 House was completely restored and improved in 2012. Four bedrooms are served by a modern kitchen and baths while all the original heart pine flooring, stone fireplaces and farmhouse design has been preserved. The home includes a pool, tennis court, bath house and greenhouse.
The Lodge serves as the perfect place for numerous guests with five bedrooms with private baths, fireplaces, large sunroom and sleeping porches overlooking the stable and paddock areas.
The Conservation Easement that protects the valley from over-development was designed with growth in mind. The easement permits another 16 cottages on the plateau where most of the improvements are located. The outer edge of this elevated plateau is the perfect place for a number of secluded homes with direct views of the river and deer grazing in the wildflower meadows below. All of Meadow Lane’s neighbors are either National Forest or other farms protected by easements. The result is a unified river valley where future development beyond farming practices has been eliminated.
The recreational opportunities of Meadow Lane are unending. Meadow Lane offers some of Virginia’s finest trout fishing. Old equestrian paths built when the farm raised steeple chase horses are now an extensive system of linked trails used for hiking, mountain biking and horseback. The Meadow Lane trail system is connected to the George Washington National Forest trail system that continues for 8 miles upriver. The farm is perfectly set up for wing shooting in addition to more traditional deer, turkey and grouse hunts.
The farming potential is tremendous, as well. Meadow Lane has approximately 250 acres of rich bottom land fields that should qualify for organic certification as there has only been hay harvest with no chemical application. Two large barns, farm manager and staff homes complete all the needed elements for any farming pursuit.
Meadow Lane is also the ultimate family compound where children, their families and grand-kids can retain the eternal joys of growing up in nature and a farm setting unchanged for hundreds of years, and hopefully, hundreds more to come. A solid connection to the land is a valuable blessing to pass on to future generations.
